あらすじ（英語）
Elderly service station owner Shadrach Jones is visited one rainy night by a group of elves and their sickly king. He takes them in, and when the king soon after dies, Jones is named his successor.

The English title is shown in the cover as "The Pre-Persons and Other Stories". Edited by 大森望, with translations by 大森望, 浅倉久志 and 若島正. Editor/Translator note regarding 「ハーラン・エリスン編『危険なヴィジョン』向きの、すべての物語の終わりとなる物語」: in order to add this story it would require 4 pages (title page, blank page, story page and blank page again) which seemed too much given the story's length, so instead it is included in the Editor's Afterword.
