地球の環境破壊と不平等に絶望した数十人のチームは、冷凍睡眠を経て惑星パックスに入植した。パックスは地球より10億年古い星で地上の多くが植物相に覆われている。ある日、原生植物“雪のように白い蔓”の果実を食べた3名が死亡。植物学者のオクタボは、植物が人間を排除するため意図的に毒化したのではと疑う...異星の知的生態系との共存を目指す入植者による、7世代100年にわたる最初の接触を描く宇宙植民年代記。
