2500万の惑星を擁する銀河帝国に没落の影が兆していた。心理歴史学者ハリ・セルダンは3万年に及ぶ暗黒時代の到来を予見、それを阻止することは不可能だが期間を短縮することはできるとし、銀河のすべてを記す『銀河百科事典』の編纂に着手した。やがて首都を追われた彼は、辺境の星テルミヌスを銀河文明再興の拠点“ファウンデーション”とすることを宣した。歴史に名を刻む三部作。

<i>Wikipedia:</i> Foundation is the first novel in Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy (later expanded into The Foundation Series). Foundation is a fixup of five interrelated short stories, first published as a single book by Gnome Press in 1951. Collectively they tell the story of the Foundation, an institute to preserve the best of galactic civilization after the collapse of the Galactic Empire. Four of these stories were originally published in a different form under different titles and a framing story, "The Psychohistorians" was added.
